BYD's Million-Plus Workforce: Bigger Than Big Auto, But There's a Catch

China's BYD is flexing serious staffing muscles, but its million-plus employee count isn't just about cranking out electric cars.

BYD's Million-Plus Workforce: Bigger Than Big Auto, But There's a Catch

Who needs a small army when you can have a million-strong workforce? China's BYD, the EV giant, now boasts over 1.02 million employees. That's more people on its payroll than Toyota, GM, Ford, and Tesla combined. Talk about a serious flex.

This isn't just a slight edge; we're talking roughly 170,000 additional bodies compared to those combined US and Japanese titans. BYD chairman Wang Chuanfu credits this mind-boggling scale to vertical integration, keeping everything from battery cells and motors to semiconductors in-house. It’s a strategy that’s propelled BYD from a battery maker to a global EV leader.

The company's headcount has been a rollercoaster. After a dip to 869,600 at the end of 2025, BYD has surged, adding roughly 150,000 people in just ten months. A significant chunk — up to 120,000 — are R&D engineers, innovating across the entire electric vehicle ecosystem.

But before you crown BYD the undisputed king of employee count, there's a critical asterisk. This isn't just a car company's payroll.

  • BYD Electronic: Its majority-owned contract manufacturer, which assembles devices for other brands, accounted for 165,000 employees alone at the end of 2025.
  • Battery Operations: BYD also includes its extensive battery manufacturing division in the overall numbers.

So, while the million-worker milestone is impressive, it paints a picture of a diversified tech conglomerate, not just a pure-play automaker. It also explains why BYD lags significantly in vehicle-per-employee output compared to rivals like Tesla and Toyota. Scale, it seems, has many definitions.
